  • I like that the setting is lush and extravagant (it made me want to live in London), but the subject matter is heavy
  • The pacing I believe, was done this way so that the audience could revel in the ride of the climax

Match Point is not like you typical Woody Allen film. Usually his movies are filled with intelligent snarky humor and strange situations. This movie, while filmed in a bright and airy way, was really quite dark.

What I liked in particular was my ability to dislike Emily Mortimer’s character right away. Whether she is really that annoying in real life, or just for this role remains to be seen.

      But

if it was the latter, she literally nailed that character quite well. In any event, the story is pretty clean cut in the beginning.

Chris (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) has an affair with Nola (Scarlett Johansson). The affair quickly escalates out of hand when Nola informs him that she’s pregnant.

You may see the typical “end” of the romance coming. But for some the outcome of Chris’ decision is quite a twist.

      • Anyway, what I really like about this movie is the twist involved. I like that the setting is lush and extravagant (it made me want to live in London), but the subject matter is heavy.

This is one of those true story-type of films, something else that Woody Allen is really good at doing with his movies. He makes you feel as if you’re reading a story, except you’re actually

        watching the characters.

I suppose this comes from the good writing, and the attention to detail. This movie is not muddled with a lot of rhetoric.

The scenes move fairly quickly, even though it seems rather slow in the beginning. The pacing I believe, was done this way so that the audience could revel in the ride of the climax.

If you like lushly filmed intelligent thrillers, you will like Match Point.
