      Far too many children in America are overweight, and that means they are probably headed for a lot of problems regarding their health!

      There is a program through Blue Cross of California that is helping to keep children at acceptably healthy weights. The program is called, “Kick”, and the number is 866-541-2219. Kick stands for Kids In Charge of Kalories! Through Blue Cross of California, members and their families (FOR FREE) learn to eat in a healthy way that will keep children from becoming obese, and in danger of chronic illnesses due to being overweight. In the last 20 years, overweight children have more than doubled in numbers. Diabetes is one of the first things I know that each overweight child is definitely in danger of getting.

      Up to 45% of new cases of childhood diabetes is completely linked to childhood obesity. That’s alarming to me. Heart disease is another condition that comes with childhood obesity! We never want our children to be


      ’set up’ for these conditions in their adulthood! We need to learn to feed our children correctly, how to make sure they get enough exercise, and to really feel good about themselves, as well as being a healthy human being!

      As a teacher, I must tell you that the obese child is not treated nicely by other students, as a general rule. How do you get help? Easily! Call the number, and the KICK program will provide you with educational materials, resources, and tons of support to reach the correct goals for your child.

      • let the child ride a bike to school or to the park, etc. instead of getting a ride. Dance to songs on the radio or the t. v.

        Walk your pet, daily. You will both benefit from this!

        Turn off the computer and the television. Make certain times for these activities that are not so long. Get the child outside to walk, to play, to jumprope, to play baseball, soccer, frisbee, anything that includes activity.

        Drink water or non-fat milk instead of sugary sodas or phony juices. Use the size of your fist as a perfect PORTION size! That’s a really good hint. Make your fruit and vegetable assortment colorful…. make it something that looks good to eat!

        The Blue Cross of California web site has an online Body Mass Index, to help you decide if you have an obese child, or if you ARE an obese child.

        it comes to making certain that your health is always at its peak. Stay trim. Be a happy, healthy person.

        I really am pushing for this free program for children. I really feel so sadly when I see a 10 yr old child who weighs more than I do, can hardly walk in a straight line, and never gets picked for any teams in school. Make childhood a good memory. Make it a healthy memory!
