This is one of my favorite hotels in Singapore: superbly located close to the Suntec City International Convention and Exhibit Center and Marina Square, right across the Mandarin Hotel, a few hundred meters from the swanky Raffles Hotel, right smack in the middle of malls, quaint shops, eateries (all prices and tastes), and some of the best open spaces in the small island nation-state of Singapore. The hotel is 20 minutes from the Singapore Expo and Changi International Airport and is within easy walking distance to many Singapore attractions, including the Singapore Art Museum, Singapore River, China Town, Little India, Arab Street, Singapore Zoo, Singapore Botanic Gardens and Singapore Science

The hotel’s facilities are upscale and the room rates are cheap, which makes this a favorite destination of honeymooners, backpackers, convention goers, and businessmen traveling on a diminished budget but who want to give an upscale impression.

Enter into the spacious lobby full of greenery and The Atrium greets you with the sound of rushing water and you feel transported to a lush tropical paradise in the middle of a concrete jungle.

Look up and see the elevators rising through their transparent frames at a fast clip.

Most rooms open into wide corridors bordered by real living plants that spew fresh oxygen into the atmosphere and ...

      • you get the impression that you are not far from Shangrila, the paradise that is, not the other hotel across town that’s also known for green architecture.

My 30th floor room opened to the Singapore skyline that’s lighted almost twenty four hours a day, and a few meters down you see the hotel swimming pool, and beyond it a major intersection that is noisy at street level but from above is like a strobe light of car headlamps providing entertainment in the middle of the night.

The room is soundproof, heavily carpeted, immaculately clean, with crisp white linen, thick warm blankets, and fluffy down pillows that made every

night of my usual one-week stays in this hotel an insomniac’s paradise.

The bathroom’s immense and well-accoutred, which meant that I had some knick-knacks to give my nieces (they love collecting these free hotel things) when I get back home.

Buffet breakfast on the house feature oriental, western, and continental diets, and the coffee they serve is freshly brewed, although I take their green tea when I get nervous in the mornings.

The hotel is at 7 Raffles Boulevard, Marina Square, Singapore.
