One of the oldest and most popular games at carnivals and at the beach is the basketball toss game. This is a game where baskets are displayed and tilted at an angle. The object to win the game is to toss at least one ball in and have it remain in the basket. This is a game that the operators are famous for displaying how easy it is to win. In the end the game is not nearly as easy as it appears. The basket toss carnival game is extremely popular though because it appears to be very simple, and the prizes tend to be very large.

Remember the old rule about large prizes usually indicating high priced games? Well this is another one that tries to fool potential participants by having relatively low costs to play along with very large prizes. Unlike some games that use this

trick to get people to play and then require them to have multiple wins to get the large prizes that are displayed, usually one win in the basket toss game will get you a large prize. So, now you are probably wondering why the cost is low? The reason is because the game is probably one of the hardest to win when you play it at the carnival or the beach. There are several advantages the operator has.

The first thing that needs to be explained is the set up of the game. Many of these games have tennis balls behind the baskets so the ball is more likely to bounce out if it hits the bottom of the basket. Also, note the set up of the game when the operator demonstrates it to you. They will almost always have a ball in the basket already, by hitting ...

      • this ball instead of the basket when you toss it in, it “deadens” the ball you throw so it doesn’t bounce out. Of course there are no balls in the basket when you throw! Note the angle that the operator throws the ball from, it is much closer to the basket and an angle you can’t get from where you throw the ball. Oh, and of course there are the rules. The biggest one that is common is “no rim shots count”. This means you can’t toss the ball on the edge of the rim and let it roll in. Rim shots are up to the interpretation of the operator of course which gives them another advantage.

Of course rim shots are one of the best ways to win in this game, but when that’s not permitted you need to come up with another strategy. The only other

one that gives you even a slight shot at winning consistently is by tossing the ball just past the rim along with a slight forward spin on the ball. This is not easy as if you are too close to the rim the operator of course will call it a rim shot.

In the end this game is probably one of the most profitable at the carnivals because of the reasonable cost and the perceived simplicity. The reality of the game though is this is one that you should avoid if you are trying to play games you can win. The deception in the demonstration and the interpretation allowed by the operator for the rim shot rules make this a game with a very low expectation of winning. In the end there are other games at the carnival that will provide a better opportunity for winning large prizes.
