I would highly recommend visiting Key West, Florida to anyone. The furthest south of the Florida Keys, Key West is so far removed from the rest of the United States, that I consider it to be something like a foreign country. I have visited the island 3 times, and every single time I have been stunned by the beauty of the Key West.

All 3 times that I visited Key West, I flew into the Ft. Lauderdale Airport. There is a small airport in Key West, but it is extremely expensive to fly into. If you fly into Ft. Lauderdale, you can either rent a car or sign up to get a shuttle bus that will take you to Key West. The drive from Ft. Lauderdale to Key West takes a little more than 3 hours. The views seen on the drive, however, are priceless.

As you drive through the upper Keys, you are amazed at the beauty and the tropical plants. As you get into the middle Keys and lower, the water turns from dark blue to completely

clear. There are tropical plants and wildlife everywhere. Some of the islands in the Keys are so thin that you can see water on both sides of you. The most spectacular sight on the drive down is definitely the seven-mile bridge. This bridge stretches over seven miles of clear, beautiful water in the lower keys.

When you arrive in Key West, it is an immediate difference from all of the other Keys that you traveled through. Key West is very built up in the new section of town. However, I have always stayed in what is called the “Old Town” which is comprised of the famous Duval Street, and the surrounding areas. The Old Town in Key West is a very historical looking place. Although there are certainly a few run down looking old houses, many of the houses have been beautifully restored.

Key West is a tropical island, so there are palm trees everywhere. Tropical plants surround almost every house and hotel, providing shade when the island sun gets too hot. There ...

      • is also the traditoional island wildlife present in Key West. For instance, wild roosters and chickens roam the streets constantly. There are also many small lizards that can be seen scooting across the streets and sidewalks.

Although it is an island, Key West is not as beachy as one might imagine. Granted there are beaches on one side of the island, but you are certainly not surrounded by beaches. In fact, depending on where you stay in Key West, the beach can be as much as a 20 minute walk away. The weather on the island is typical island weather however, when I have been there in December and January, the weather has always been about 80 degrees. When it rains on the island, it generally only rains for a little bit, and sometimes the sun stays out during the rain shower.

When discussing Key West, it would be a crime not to mention the bar scene. There are more bars than you could ever visit in one trip! I read a fact in one of the travel guides

while visiting stating that there are, in fact, more bars per square mile, than in any other place in the U.S. I completely believe that. All along Duval Street, there is bar after bar after bar. Many bars sit on the water of the Harbor on one end of Duval Street. There are bars that have specific themes: Irish bars, etc. There are also bars with frozen drinks that come out of the wall like slurpees at 711! One thing is for sure, you will never complain that Key West does not have an interesting night life!

It is said in Key West, that the odd is actually normal. I cannot find a more adequate statement to describe the island. Every night, there are sights to see on the streets. Men dressed up as women, 5 foot long snakes riding on a man’s shoulderss, and cats riding on dogs backs are not looked at as strange. This island town is certainly a place to visit! I cannot stress enough how beautiful and amazing Key West is!
