In this rather depressing portrayal of the future, America appears to have lost all its freedoms and turned into a totalitarian society. One of the cruel, government-run entertainments is “The Running Man” show, where convicted criminals are

given a chance to run for freedom - but they will be hunted. If they manage to evade all the hunters, heavily armed with chainsaws and other niceties of that sort, they can be free - but ...

      • as of yet, nobody has ever made it. The chase is broadcasted live, and bets are accepted as to which one of the hunters will kill the running man. When Ben Richards (Arnold Schwarzenegger), a former cop,
is sent to the show, everyone expects the usual chase & kill - but Richards proves to be a hard one to kill. He does not just evade the hunters, he actually fights and kills them, despite being unarmed.
