Jeremy, a 17 year old boy, is left quite alone in the world when his mother dies of cancer. In a touching letter his mother has left for him, she urges Jeremy to find his uncle Aiden, a man who had disappeared when Jeremy was 7 and had no

contact with the family ever since.

The letter says that Uncle Aiden had been in the same accident that had taken Jeremy’s father’s life, and warns the boy that Aiden will not be easy to get along with.

However, the letter insists that Jeremy sticks to his uncle and ...

      • lives with him.

The boy decides to do what his mother wanted him to do and sets out to search for his uncle.

Hitchhiking all the way from Tennessee to Atlanta, he eventually finds Uncle Aiden, a rough coal miner who doesn’t care for company.

        Just like the letter

warned, Aiden does not greet his nephew with open arms; on the contrary, he does all he can to run the boy off, implying in many ways that he is not suited for the hard life of a miner.

But Jeremy doesn’t give up, and eventually proves the opposite.
