Is Zupreem AvianMaintenance FruitBlend Flavor Bird Diets the best diet for grass seed eating finches?

I am a breeder of Zebra finches and ZuPreem pellet diets are not the best diet for grass finches like the Zebra finch.

A good finch seed diet (with supplements) is a better diet for grass finches. There is no advantage to a pellet diet for grass finches except for “clean-up”. Finches on pellets do not produce seed hull mess.

Cost? Nobody has convinced me that a pellet diet vs. a seed

diet is cheaper unless you only have a couple of finches and do not buy seed in quantity.

Health advantages? Grass finch experts do not say that pellets are better than seed for seed eating finches like Zebra and Gouldian finches. The confusion comes from the fact that pellets are a superior diet for most hook-billed birds. Most of the pellet praise comes from the studies and recommendations that apply to nutrition needs of hook-bills. Some people have tried to “piggy back” the advantages of ...

      • pellets over to “finches”. It is important to remember that not all birds are the same and not all “finches” are the same when it comes to dietary needs.

In another review Jeannine wrote; “I own eight birds, a combination of parakeets and zebra finches. A diet of seeds is traditional and stereotypical for pet birds. Birds love seeds like people love junk food. Seeds are junk food for birds. A diet of seeds is high in fat and lacking in nutrition. Veterinarians now recommend

a pelletized diet that contains all the nutrition birds need.”

A finch seed mix diet is not a “junk food” for Zebra finches.

Zupreem says; “Zupreem AvianMaintenance FruitBlend Flavor Bird Diets are formulated to meet all the accepted nutrient requirements for the maintenance of various types of adult psittacines (hookbills) and passerines (softbills).” This is the reason avian veterinarians recommend a pellet food like Zupreem AvianMaintenance FruitBlend Flavor Bird Diets over seed for large psittacines.

For grass finches, a good seed mix with supplements is a better choice.
