I’ve just returned from seeing the new “Pride and Prejudice” (2005, starring Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet and Matthew MacFadyen as Mr. Darcy).

      What can I say.

I didn’t expect much, and therefore wasn’t very disappointed.

Keira Knightley is cute (perhaps a little too cute

for Elizabeth) and pretty much carries the movie.

      MacFadyen is a *total* miscast.

He is not handsome, and the modern-day hairdo a la “explosion at a macaroni factory” is not something an aristocrat would be seen walking around with.

Most other characters have messed-up hair ...

      • as well, so I suppose that was the movie makers’ perception of “cool.

” Some of the story is rushed, the two youngest Bennet sisters are so much alike they are easily confused.

For some reason, the Bennets live in a very poor house, large enough

on the outside to be considered a nice estate and yet all crammed and messy inside.

Bottom line: if you want to see a good adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice,” stick with the 1995 mini series starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle.

        That one is a classic.
