A friend brought over a copy of this movie. I immediately thought of the City of God, although that film takes place in Brazil. Anyway, this film features two young Haitian men who have been called to serve in an army called “Chimeres”.

These are basically thugs that the

President Aristide was using to help keep order in the slums of Haiti. This film has a lot of movement.

There are many people talking, lots of scenes cutting to and away… So, if you’re not reading the subtitles and paying attention, you can quickly become lost. Additionally, there are several scenes which are shot in night vision.

This too, will be confusing if you’re not familiar with the characters’ names and faces. This movie is really harsh, very brutal and violent.

is five times more brutal than anything we could imagine in the United States.

The ghettos there don’t have cable television, showers with hot running water, or even doors! Many of them are outdoors. People bathe in the open with no privacy.

So, there is no such thing

as calling the exterminator for a few cockroaches. In Haiti, you bathe with them.

I thought that these nuances were brilliantly captured in filming. But if you’re a person with a short attention span, you will likely become lost in the action, and the story.

      Watch with an open mind.
