Columbus is a small southern town located in North Carolina. It is the last stop off of interstate 26 before you hit the South Carolina border. Columbus is growing in size but still lacks having a Wal-Mart of their own. So everyone drives to Spartanburg in South Carolina, or Hendersonville and Rutherfordton in North Carolina if they want to shop at a Wal-Mart. They have several factories in this town.

One of the biggest is the Milliken Company. They produce textiles but since textile jobs are being exported over seas because of lower wage standards for employees I don’t expect them to stay open another ten years. In recent years I am more and more frustrated that they have been hiring more and more illegal’s to work there. Columbus is

the county seat for Polk County.

It has the usual restaurants, McDonald’s, Pizza Hut and Waffle House. It has two grocery stores and various other small business like Car Quest, and a hardware store, including a laundry mat. There are four red lights all of which are on the main street and two of them are for getting on and off the interstate. There is a small city park for kids to play at.

My favorite thing about Columbus is the old court house in the center of town. It has a clock at the top it that still keeps time accurately.

Columbus sits at the bottom of Saluda grade. Saluda grade is very steep and is know for its wrecks in the winter time especially.

      One of ...

      • the ramps to get on interstate 26 from Columbus is also know for its wrecks because of how sharp of a corner it has. One of the local mountains is named chocolate drop because that is what it is shaped like. When we drive around Columbus on the 74 by pass you are at the foot of Chocolate Drop Mountain. It always makes me hungry for chocolate when I think about it.

I’m not sure of who named it that but it does suit it. Columbus has the only high school for Polk County. It has a new middle school and it’s own grade school as well. Over all its not a bad town to live in or visit.

In the spring the trees across from Milliken are extremely

full of beautiful pink blossoms. The area is surrounded by lots of apple orchards that are pretty when they are in bloom too. Besides I love fresh apples in the fall. There is a small spot just outside of town on silver creek road that we call the car wash.

You see the road goes through a creek and all of the locals stop when they get in the water to wash their cars. We like it because it is a cool relaxing spot to hang out on a hot summer day. There are several water falls that are nice to look at and are close to the car wash in the state forest preserve area out by the Green River. Columbus is located off I26 and highway 74 in North Carolina.
