Steel Magnolias is a wonderful little movie about women and their relationships with each other. Steel Magnolias showcases the talents of Shirley MacLaine (Ouiser), Sally Field (M’Lynn), Dolly Parton (Truvy), Julia Roberts (Shelby), Olympia Dukakis (Clairee) and Daryl Hannah (Annelle).

      With a

cast like that, how can you go wrong? Steel Magnolias is brilliant! I relish the scenes in Truvy’s beauty shop with all the women gathered, getting their hair and nails done, gossiping about everything and everyone in town.

There is so much love and support between the friends, old and new.

Steel Magnolias will make you cry, each and every time, I guarantee it! This is a mother daughter, family movie you will want to watch with your girlfriends, mother, daughters…again and again and ...

      again.

The movie revolves around the life of Shelby, but you learn details of other less important characters, too.

Shelby is getting married at the start of Steel Magnolias, then she is pregnant, has her baby and what happens next I will

      not give away.

Julia Roberts is awesome as Shelby, and her supporting cast is very believable as genteel Southern women, living their lives out.

No matter what happens, nothing can be too bad or too good, because the magnolias are made of steel!

Michael McDowell says :

M’Lynn was very protective of Shelby as she was her only daughter as well as Shelby having diabetes. M’Lynn feels she is losing her daughter and is simultaneously concerned for her health and well-being.

The movie focuses on adult female friendships and in times of crisis, how do the women show support and empathy for M`Lynn? What differences in male and female intimacy styles can be seen in the movie? How do M`Lynn use defensive climate behaviors when attempting to maintain connection? How do M`Lynn and Shelby struggle with the dialectical tension of autonomy vs. connection? What theory or theories are used to portray gender differences?
