The movie “Running With Scissors” was originally a memoir penned by Augusten Burroughs. In both the book and the movie we are introduced to the pitiful members of Augusten’s family (both biological and adoptive). Augusten’s mother, Diedre, is a passionate poetic soul with a penchant for drama. Augsten’s father, Norman, is an alcoholic, cold man who maintains air of indifference towards both his wife and son. The poor kid

      was doomed from the start.

Eventually, Diedre falls under the care of an eccentric phsychiatrist, Dr. Finch. He starts to heavily medicate her after the collapse of her marriage. She slips into a fuzzy-eyed, dazed state and can no longer care for herself, let alone her 14-year old son. So, she hands him over to Finch. That’s where all the madness begins…

The bulk of this movie takes place ...

      • in the seventies. Except for a few scattered references to the events of that decade, and the scene where Augusten and Natalie (the daughter of his adoptive parents) are doing “The Hustle” in the living room, you can easily forget that it’s supposed to be the seventies.

The cinematography is beautiful in this film. The characters are all interesting, but you find it hard to believe that these people really

existed the way young Augusten describes them. Throughout the movie we see him keeping careful notes in a journal, so as not to forget or overlook any of the details.

I enjoyed this movie, mostly, because of the acting. Annette Bening was amazing as Diedre, Joseph Fiennes was almost unrecognizable in his role as Augusten’s pschitsophrenic boyfriend, aged 35. The performances are what really made this movie memorable and enjoyable.
