Apples to Apples is a game that was recently introduced to me, and it is already my favorite game. This game offers a refreshing change from standard board games and it comes with all cards. It comes with green and red cards, and they have words on them. On the red cards are nouns or phrases. Many of them have the names of people or places listed, and others have phrases, such as, “taking a bath.” On the green cards are describing words, like, for instance, the word “weird.” In case you are not sure exactly what the word on the green card means, there are synonyms listed, so it

becomes more clear. One person is the judge, and that person draws a green card and reads it aloud. All of the other people must choose from one of their 7 red cards, a word that fits the word on the green card the best. The object is to choose one that you think the judge will like the best. The one that the judge picks is the winner of that round, and whoever wins 8 rounds first wins the game.

This game leads to much entertainment and laughter. Sometimes, people will choose words that don’t fit the green card at all, just to be funny. For example, I once choose the ...

      • red card “taking a bath” to fit the green card, “weird.” Sometimes, people just don’t have cards in their hand that will fit the green card, so they have to use one that doesn’t fit it at all like that. One of the best parts about the game is that it doesn’t require much thought at all, but it can still be very humorous to play. Plus, it really doesn’t take all that long to finish the game, unlike some games (Monopoly, anyone?).

The game comes with two sets of cards, which amounts to 2 large piles of green cards and about 6 piles of red cards. There are also expansion packs that

can be purchased. Also included in the game are cards that you can make yourself, which some people might like. You can put in words and phrases of your own, which would make the game more personalized. So far, I haven’t seen anyone that has actually done that, but it might be kind of fun to try.

The one drawback to this game is that, in order for it to be fun, you must have at least 4 players. There are not always four people around or four people that would like to play it all at once. But, once you do find four or more people to play, it really is a blast.
