  • As I said, Hitchcock's influence is definitely felt here, and the predecessor film is tame compared to this one, but Disturbia is a great film to watch, with fine performances by the cast, and expert handling by the director

Drawing upon its Hitchcockian influences, Disturbia is Rear Window for a modern audience. Instead of being confined to his apartment with a broken leg, Kale Brecht (Shia LaBeouf) is confined to his house, under house arrest, for rattling the skull of one of his teachers. He has an ankle bracelet that keeps him from leaving.

Like the Stewart character before him, Kale spends his

time observing his neighbors in his suburban neighborhood. He gets to know their routines, their quirks and oddities, and in one or two cases, their secrets. When the new girl moves in next door, Kale and his best friend Ronnie convince her that the neighbor across the way, Robert Turner (David Morse), the one who mows his lawn several times a day,

      • is not who he seems. They begin to believe he is a killer.

Here, although the similarities with Rear Window remain, including the look from the accused, through a window, directly at Kale through his binoculars, Disturbia seems more graphic and detailed. At any given time, up to the end, our doubts about the neighbor remain.

The spookiest scene involves Ronnie, who disappears while trying

to get back his cell phone from Turner’s car, inside the garage. Terrifying images. Not until the final sequences is the level of terror and suspense so great.

As I said, Hitchcock’s influence is definitely felt here, and the predecessor film is tame compared to this one, but Disturbia is a great film to watch, with fine performances by the cast, and expert handling by the director.
