Match of the Penguins is a card game for kids by Gamewright, a company I had never previously heard of. In this game, cards are turned over, each card featuring a picture or part of a picture of a penguin sitting at the beach. If you see parts of the picture that match - both umbrellas are green, etc, than

you take a token. If you see more than one pairing - both umbrellas are green, both blankets are red, than you take a token. If you see two identical cards you take a different token. And if you see a bucket with two fish on one of the cards, you knock. Different combinations are ranked higher than each other,

      • so not everyone wins. If you take a token or knock incorrectly, you lose a card. If you win you get to take the cards on the table.

I think it is a bit overly complicated. There isn’t really a pattern to the things you have to do, and there isn’t a finite number of cards that get turned over

on each turn, it all feels a bit loose. Once you get used to the game it is a bit more flowing, but for the first while, it’s awkward to remember which action to do for what, and there honestly doesn’t seem to be a point to the different actions.

It’s not bad, and the pictures are cute, it’s just not great.
