How lucky is Will Smith to be able to act with his real life son Jaden? What a fine performance the two of them put in to make Pursuit of Happyness such a joy to see. It is the story of hope, tenacity, desperation, all the things humans in this life must struggle through in order to find happiness. It is a curious thing that some people go through life relatively unscathed, with opportunities just seemingly handed to them, where they just have little they need to do to succeed. Then there are others, Like Chris Gardner here, who have to claw their way out of deep earthen pits, with the sides of the walls crumbling in around him, just to get

up to be at rock bottom, only to have his teeth kicked in for no reason.

That is a tough position to be in in life. Add to that a son to care for, and no place to truly call home night after night, and you have the makings of someone who could either go postal on society, or end his life. But in the midst of all his struggles, Chris keeps his eye on the prize: an internship at Dean Witter, six months without pay, for a chance to be hired on permanent.

The catch is that only one person will be hired. With the odds stacked so high against him, Chris plods forward, son in tow, trying to keep his wits ...

      • about him, eking out a living on the side by selling a bone density scanner he invented to area doctors. He uses this money to keep food in their bellies and a roof over their head.

When the roof is taken away, he still doesn’t give up. It is off to the homeless shelter, rushing to get in line by 5 pm just to have a roof over their heads. During one scene, rushing to the bus that would take them to the shelter, Jaden drops his beloved superhero doll, his only profession.

Such a sad scene, an indicator of the level of sacrifice on both his and his father’s part. It shows the level of commitment to each other, to their

situation, a key ingredient to Chris’ eventual success. Without support of family, of blood ties, all would be lost.

I don’t care who you are, no one succeeds without support and commitment from your family. Here, Jaden stood by his father, and the payoff is true happiness for the both of them.

The best scene of all, for me, was the one where Chris receives news that he alone got the job.

The tears in his eyes say more than words. He made it. All the struggles he and his son had endured were now worth every moment.

They had both been changed forever, and were better people because of it. Life had dealt them numerous tough blows, yet they had remained standing.
