I’m glad I saw the newer Punisher, with John Travolta as the villain, before I saw the original Punisher, starring Dolph Lundgren as Frank Castle. It started out with promise, with Castle already presumed dead, and Punisher on his vigilante jaunt for five years now. Then it quickly nose dives into B-movie territory and stays there for the rest of the show.

It had the look and feel of a

made-for-tv movie the whole way through.

There were some interesting moments and characters.

The wino who helps Punisher by trading news for booze is an interesting slant missing from the remake, but his involvement is never made clear, and his relationship with Castle is never made known. Also missing is any solid connection between Jake Berkowitz (Louis Gossett Jr) and Castle.

They were supposed to be kindred spirits from way back, but ...

      • that relationship is never developed. There are a scene or two where they try, but the attempt is weak, feeble, unconvincing.

The character of Sam Leary, Berkowitz’s partner, is flimsy, completely unnecessary. There could have been a lot more to not only that relationship but the three way character dynamic between Castle, Berkowitz and Leary.

Like the rest of the story, it fizzles and dies.

The villains are tv cardboard cutouts.

is no menace to them. Tanaka was offing the mobsters.

All Castle had to do was stay out of the way and let the last man (or woman) standing be the one he goes after. But the writers had to bring in children to motivate Castle.

Cheap tactics, to an even cheaper movie. Save your money and go for the newer version of Punisher.

It is cleaner, tighter, and more believable.
