I don’t think anyone else but Jeff Daniels and Jim Carrey could play Harry and Lloyd. You hear that all the time, that so-and-so are born to play a role, but Jim Carrey was Lloyd Christmas, and Jeff was Harry Dunne. They both stepped into these characters seamlessly, artfully. This was also another movie where the entire cast not only showed up for work, but did overtime. They all moved around the utter dumbness of Harry and Lloyd with charm and tolerance.

Lloyd is the centerpiece of the movie. It is his quest to get the suitcase full

of money back to Mary Swanson in Aspen, Colorado. Harry follows along like the loyal friend he is. Who else but a friend would ride into snow country on a scooter? Of course, as with any buddy film, there has to be a bout of jealousy, even rivalry, and there is no short of abundance here. Dating the same woman, sabotaging the other’s efforts. There is one scene where Lloyd fixes Harry’s plumbing with a special brew, just before he is to go on his date with her. Naturally, the pipes don’t burst until Harry is at ...

      • Mary’s house. After a flatulent display that brings the stitches ripping out of your sides, do they stop there? No. She comes to tell Harry the toilet is broken and not to use it.

All ends well as Harry and Lloyd (though it is mainly Harry with the help of the FBI, but we’ll give Lloyd his delusion of grandeur) save the day and bust the bad guys. All this effort over a woman, only to find out the girl Lloyd has been ga-ga over is married! Ain’t it the truth?

But Lloyd and Harry make up for their

heroism by returning to their dumb selves. Case in point: A bus load of Hawaiian Tropic beauties stop by the roadside as Harry and Lloyd are hitching a ride back home. They need a couple of guys to rub oil all over their bodies while they are on tour. So, our dumb heroes point the lovely ladies in the direction of the nearest town. They close by saying those two guys who land the job of rubbing oil on these beauties are going to be the luckiest guys around, and that their time will come.

        I doubt it.
