With Quincy Magoo, you either love him, or you hate him. I happen to love the old guy, voiced by Jim Backus, and his version of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol stands to me as one of my all-time favorite holiday classics.

Set within a Broadway stage presentation, complete with intermission and curtain call, Magoo as Ebenezer Scrooge is one of cinema’s best interpretations of the old miser visited technically

by four ghosts in one night.

The story is the familiar one, but what appeals most to me is the characterizations, with familiar and much-loved cartoon voices.

The songs stand out most to me in this film.

From the get-go, Magoo is singing about how ‘It’s Great To Be Back on Broadway’.

But I love the scene where Magoo is singing about his love of money, how the gold ...

      • coins jingle, in ‘Ringle, Ringle.

’ Next comes the hauntingly sad song, sung by Scrooge as a boy, back in school, about being all ‘Alone In The World.

’ The delightful song the Cratchit’s sing, as they pretend to have all the fanciful things that attend a full Christmas dinner, including Tiny Tim’s razzleberry dressing, ‘The Lord’s Bright Blessing’, is fun and shows you that merriment comes from the heart, not

        the pocketbook.

Lastly, there is the song sung by the charwoman, the undertaker and the launderess, all trying to make some money off Scrooge after his death.

‘We’re Dispicable (Plunderer’s March)’ is very wickedly funny.

So, to me, the music and the animation sets this version of ‘A Christmas Carol’ apart as an amusing and family-friendly foray into Scrooge’s past, present and future.

You won’t be disappointed, year after year.
