  • The best sequence was the final one, when Indy and his group finally reach the Holy Grail
  • The Guardian of the Grail required a bit of a stretch of the imagination, but since the rest of the movie was so good, I found it easy to do

With Temple of Doom, my rant was that it did not have enough of Raiders’ successful elements in it to make me like it the first time out. With Last Crusade, the opposite was true.

It was too much like Raiders.

Blatantly obvious was returning characters Brody and Sallah, an attempt to recapture some of Raiders’ elements.

Story structure was also blatantly obvious, as if the screenplay from Last Crusade

was laid over the top of Raiders.

Last Crusade made up for these shortcomings by adding Sean Connery to the cast as Indy’s father.

The opening sequence, like Raiders and Temple of Doom, was exciting and drawn out.

There were daring chase sequences, like the boats on the river in Venice, the zeppelin and plane, and of course the tank chase (mirrored in Raiders as the desert chase sequence).

      Still, many ...

      • of the elements that made Raiders such a success made Last Crusade a hit as well.

I just think the screenwriters could have hidden them a bit more.

The best sequence was the final one, when Indy and his group finally reach the Holy Grail.

As in Raiders and Temple of Doom, Last Crusade relied on a supernatural element in its storytelling.

The Guardian of the Grail required a bit of

a stretch of the imagination, but since the rest of the movie was so good, I found it easy to do.

The finale, showing the four men riding off into the sunset, foretold more adventures to come, or the real finale for the franchise.

Seeing as how Indy IV is right around the corner, I’d say the final curtain in Last Crusade should be delayed at least until next year.
