If my daughter were writing this review of Disney’s Cinderella, it would be scathing. For some reason, Snow White is the reigning queen of the Disney Princesses, and she isn’t even technically a princess until the end. I smile whenever she goes into one of her rants when Cinderella is brought up in conversation, but inwardly I fail to see the cause of her wrath, so chalk

it up as little girl jealousy.

Really, Cinderella is flawless. This 17th-century French fable, about a scullery maid who becomes the belle of the ball and goes on to marry Prince Charming, has occupied the hearts and minds of little girls since it first came to light. It couldn’t fail.

I like what Walt did to make changes to this tale, to modernize it. Making the fairy godmother matronly ...

      • and sweet, instead of the old hag she was in the original story, was pure Disney. To him, the old hag is befitting villainesses, like the Evil Queen of Snow White. He also changed Cinderella’s fur slippers into glass slippers. My guess is to make them seem more magical.

The two jealously abusive step-sisters, Anastasia and Drizella, I felt, were appropriately goofy when standing next to Cinderella’s constantly

regal posture. Her wicked stepmother was interestingly kept in shadows most of the time. Very interesting characterization. The king, Prince Charming, and Grand Duke, serve their purposes well. It is the animal characters, specifically the mice who steal most of the show. I have yet to see an incarnation of Cinderella fail yet, and Disney’s 1950 entry proves that Cinderella will win the hearts of young and old forever.
