Who could remember what life was like before Captain Jack Sparrow? It seems to me he’s always been around. And I’m grateful to Johnny Depp for bucking the authority at Disney and creating the lead character in this movie his way. I think Depp captures the personality and era of those pirates of the Golden Age clearly.

Fairbanks, Errol Flynn - even Robert Newton, all of whom played pirates as dashing swashbucklers and colorful characters. But Johnny Depp stepped out of the stereotypical clich of the pirate and made this character his own.
