  • This was a time when a person could take a dime to the theater on a Saturday morning, get candy and popcorn, watch a newsreel, a cartoon or two, a short subject like Our Gang or Laurel and Hardy,a feature or two, and a serial cliffhanger, where you have to comeback next week to find out what happened to our hero

We need more movies like this one, to keep the past alive. Not history’s past, but cinema’s past. It was George Lucas’ vision to make the Indiana Jones movies be reminiscent of the old movie serials of the 30’s and 40’s. This was a time when a person could take a dime to the theater on a Saturday morning, get candy and popcorn, watch a newsreel, a cartoon or two, a short subject

like Our Gang or Laurel and Hardy,a feature or two, and a serial cliffhanger, where you have to comeback next week to find out what happened to our hero.

Raiders of the Lost Ark captures that era beautifully. I don’t know if Lucas and Spielberg deliberately chose the 1930’s to set their story in, but it works to bring a larger-than-life hero to our minds and our hearts.

There is only one flaw ...

      • to this movie, which in some minds is a big flaw, but to the masses who even now clamor to see this film, not a big deal. Those who see it as a big flaw are primarily writers. The flaw is the fact that the story would end the same, with or without Indiana Jones. In other words, the hero isn’t needed at all in the story, for it to come to it’s
conclusion. All throughout the story, the bad guys tested Indy taking everything away from him, starting with the idol of the beginning, and going through to Marion, the imprint of the staff of Ra, and eventually, the Ark itself. Only Heaven’s intervention stopped Belloq and the Nazi’s.

But, who cares? Indy’s charisma was our guide on this grand adventure. We need a new hero to carry this storytelling style forth to a new generation.
