I really enjoy reading travel books sometimes so I was really pleased to find Rosemary Mahoney’s travelogue “Down the Nile.” The premise of the book is that Rosemary wanted to row a boat down the Nile, that is from south to north. In the book Rosemary tries to overcome the Egyptian society’s prejudice against women appearing in public and engaging in activities that are not traditional for Egyptian woman.

Rosemary ends up rowing north from Aswan in two, separate three-day stretches.

Rosemary had read lots of previous travel books dealing with the travel on the Nile and quotes from them frequently. She quotes from two separate, accounts in particular: that of Florence Nightingale and Gustave Flaubert. Coincidentally they two traveled the Nile at the same time, but did not, meet.

For me, book does not work well. Rosemary spends ...

      • much of the time talking over and over again about how she is treated by Egyptian men. It seems that without exception she is treated as being incompetent and that she is universally propositioned by the men she meets. Between her repeated accounts of her meeting with Egyptian men and the frequent quotations from other travel books, there is little about the actual journey. As a result Mahoney manages
to make traveling along the Nile seem boring and uninteresting. When I read a travel book, I hope to be entertained and informed. A really good book will make me want to visit the area the book is written about. In this case this book did not make me want to travel on the Nile. In fact just the opposite. I give the book an 81 or a B-.
