In a couple of days, the City of Beaver Dam, WI will once again celebrate the annual Halloween tradition of trick or treating. While I’m sure my daughter will enjoy it, I do feel the city’s restrictions on the event take away from the traditions we were used to growing up.

First, Beaver Dam no longer allows trick or treating on Halloween; unless it falls on a Saturday or Sunday. This year’s trick or treating is

on Oct. 28. I’m sure the younger kids enjoy it still but what’s the point in actually having the holiday if you aren’t going to celebrate on the holiday?

I’m also not thrilled by the hours: 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. I can understand wanting to have the trick or treating during the day time, to improve visibility and keep kids from getting hit by cars; I’m all for that. But, they only give you two ...

      • hours. That’s only enough time to trick or treat around your own neighborhood. Again, not a huge deal if more people participated and gave out Halloween candy. But, most blocks only have two or three houses with their lights on. The only way to give your kids a real trick or treating experience is to take them to other parts of town so they can get as much candy as possible. And, two hours just
        isn’t enough to do that.

While I do appreciate the fact Beaver Dam has trick or treating to begin with, I am of the opinion they should hold the event on Halloween. Give the elementary school kids half a day off for it (the older kids are too old to trick or treat anyway) if you have to. And, give them at least four hours to go door to door. Otherwise, you’re just ruining the event for everyone.
