Tyler Perry is truly one of the underdog success stories in American filmmaking. His stage plays have brought him tons of success.

But I am still waiting for him to make a really riveting movie.

“Why Did I Get Married?” is full of stars

(Janet Jackson, Jill Scott, Michael Jai White, and Tyler himself–amongst others).

But despite the “ensemble” cast of talent, the movie was a little flat.

The story line is just as benign as many other romantic comedies.

But with African American actors heading up the ...

      • mini-plots, the story just stalled in several places.

I found the marriage between Jill Scott and Richard T.

Jones to be incredibly unbelievable–not because Jill is a large woman in the movie, but because the movement, interaction, and chemistry between them didn’t seem real.

Others in the movie were comical.

But the exaggeration of the comedic situations takes away from the humor.

I wish that these types of films didn’t “dumb down” the way African Americans view marriage and relationships.

I felt that in some ways, this movie did just that.
