Helene, a New York writer, gives up on trying to find British authors she likes in her homeland. She writes to a used bookstore in London. Frank, the bookstore manager, sends her a detailed reply.

Yes, they do have some of the books she is interested in; yes, they can ship those books

to the United States. Helene immediately senses an interesting, knowledgeable booklover.

As she continues her correspondence with the bookstore, she includes her comments, thoughts, and remarks. Frank does the same.

Their correspondence turns into friendship. This friendship, through letters, lasts 20 years.

Helene and Frank never meet; she does plan a trip once,

      • but dental emergency drains her funds, and she has to cancel the trip. When she does make it to England years later, Frank is dead, and the bookstore is no longer open.

I found this unusual story - true story, by the way - very moving. The depth of both characters is shown wonderfully

        through their letters.

I could easily see why they were drawn to each other: they are so unique, and yet so much alike. Anthony Hopkins plays Frank, your typical, proper British gentleman.

I laughed more than once at Helene’s intentional teasing him with Americanisms. Anne Bancroft plays Helene, and she is also very good.
