Ella Enchanted is somewhat of a cross between Cinderella and Shrek. We have a modernized fantasy world with ogres, elves, giants, taxi carriages and man-powered wooden escalators.

And we have a teenage girl Ella who lives with a step mother and (of course) her two evil daughters.

      However, there

is a fresh new twist to the familiar Cinderella plot: when Ella is born, her fairy godmother gives her a “gift of obedience.

” The fairy means well, but the gift turns out to be a curse, taking away Ella’s free will.

She must follow other people’s orders, no matter what they tell her to do.

Needless to say, the evil step mother and step sisters abuse Ella’s gift, making her their slave.

The sisters even tell her to steal things from the store, and Ella is forced to do that.

One day, Ella meets and befriends Char, the ...

      prince of the land.

The two fall in love, but Ella knows that she can’t possibly marry Char while she is under the obedience curse: all her step mother has to do is order her not to.

So Ella decides to find her fairy godmother and ask her to

      take the “gift” back.

Unfortunately, some modern-day stupidity has made its way into the story.

We see teenage girls lick the floor (yes, *lick*) on which the prince has walked.

A giant farts and knocks an elf off a bench.

I find this obsession with foolish and disgusting things more than annoying.
