The story of Cinderella has been cloned so many times, successfully and not. This 2004 attempt offers a contemporary, high school version set in California. For Cinderella, we have Sam, who is a high school girl sneered at by the popular crowd and overworked by her evil step mother.

Two mean step sisters are here as well, doing exactly what they’re supposed to be doing tormenting Sam. For a

prince, we have Austin, the high school Mr.

Popular (rather poor substitution if you ask me). Sam and Austin go to the same school, but do not really know each other.

They happen to meet in a chat room and communicate online, without revealing their names. Their cyber romance grows, and they decide to meet in person at the school’s Halloween dance.

Sam’s step mother, of course, does not want her ...

      • to go to the dance, so Sam sneaks out of the diner where she works in order to go and meet with her cyber-boyfriend. Just like Cinderella, she must return my 12:00, or she is in trouble.

Just like Cinderella, she runs and loses something - but not a shoe, a cell phone. Austin picks it up and tries to find Sam with its help.

Teens love this movie, from what I

see. My guess is that it appeals to them because all the high school drama is so recognizable.

Popular-unpopular, snotty cheerleaders, teasing, self-consciousness, peer pressure… And a cute romantic story thrown in. I don’t think the movie is that great, but it’s all right.

I suppose it could have been much worse. At least it manages to stay clean and has some positive moments in it, like good character being rewarded.
