Interpol fans awaited this release with much anticipation. Kings of all things austere, New York based Interpol have previously honed its taut guitar rock into an art form. I fear this album will disappoint eager disciples. This time around they’ve opted to minimize the drum and bass and replace it with an orchestra and highly polished soundscapes. Whilst they have re-visited the

style and themes of their knockout debut, “Turn The Bright Lights”, this album is mellow and subdued the whole way through. Unfortunately, nothing stands out and each song tends to meld unto one another, making it mere background music rather than something you can sink your teeth into. The post-punk influence still lingers, with some dark moments.

Bank’s lyrics have suffered a blow,

      • with lucid details of relationship problems, drug addictions, and groupie fun in stark contrast to the ambiguous imagery he usually adopts. Opening track “Pioneer To The Falls” is beautifully haunting, a gentle riff mixed with some funeral trumpeteering, but from there they stumble. “Our Love To Admire” aspires to be an epic, broad brushed aesthetic experience.

The whole album seems a more designed

sound, which may have been influenced by a change in indie label Matador to the major Capitol records. “All Fired Up” is a standout, reminiscent of Interpol at their best. “Wrecking Ball” is aloft with reverberated guitar and “The Lighthouse” symphonic with choppy breakdowns. It is difficult to tell whether this album is a parody of the New Wave movement or missing a screw.
