Atharvam is a classic mystical movie written by Shibu and directed by Dennis joseph.

The storyline of the movie is about the hero trying to control the forces of nature. The role of the hero is played by superstar Mammooty. He is helped by a forest girl who can be describe as the hero-in (whose role is played by the sensous silk smitha).

The movie begins in a village, somewhere in Kerala. The village priest and sorcerer is Charu Hassan. He has one son (played by Ganesh kumar) and another son (played by Mammooty). While Ganesh Kumar’s mother is a brahmin woman, Mammooty’s mother is a pullava women in the movie.

Even so, Charu Hassan doesnot differentiate between them and teaches both of them the three good vedas. (The Yajur Veda, the rig veda and the sama

veda) There is also another veda which is considered as evil. It is the atharva veda. It is from this veda that the movie is named Atharvam.

Even when Mammooty learns the three vedas better than Ganesh Kumar, the people of the village do not accept mammooty as the priest because he is only half brahmin. So he is made an outcast from the village. Mammooty goes into the nearby forests and learns the fourth and evil veda, the atharva with the help of another sorcerer (role-played by Thilakan).

With the help of the new knowledge, he tries to control the various elements of nature for the purpose of the benefit of the mankind. But Ganesh Kumar (his brother) thinks differently and sets out to stop his brother from trifling with the elements of nature.

      • Silk Smitha who is a very popular star in Kerala played the role of a forest girl who helps Mammooty in his applications of his new found knowledge.

The movie then shows the conflict among the two sorcerers (Mammooty and Ganesh Kumar). The climax goes on to show how trifling with the natures elements has its repurcussions on the village. Cyclones, floods and hurricanes hit the village one by one and people start getting killed. So in order to stop all these, Mammooty sacrifices himself by killing himself and mixing with the five elements of nature, prithvi, ap, thejas, vayu and akasha.

Even though the story is excellent, the technical details of the films are not as good. This is what I film when I watched the film. At times trying to frighten the audience the

director has ovedone some of the special effects. And at times even when the film was supposed to make a frightening effect on the audience, I found myself laughing. This is because the effects are not good.

Even so, one has to agree that the actors have done their duty to the roles perfectly. Mammooty and Ganesh Kumar have done their roles particularly well and need a special praise.

Each of them has acted well. The songs in the movie are also good. One song “Poovay Virinju” is particularly notable. It adds the exact mystic effect to the movie. Even if you know nothing of the movie and listen to the song you will find it terrific.

Anyway my rating of the movie is 7 out of 10 as more could have been done with so wondeful a storyline.
