The Armenian visionary filmmaker Sergei Parajanov is one of my favorite directors through all time. The Legend of Suram Fortress is one of his last films.

      The narrative is very

complex and the visual style is like nothing else.

The story is about an old armenian myth that took place several hundred years ago.

But it isn’t the story that is interesting here, only how Parajanov puts it into images.

A true artist, a cinematic poet.

Parajanov developed his own language in cinema that really hold no resemblance to anything.

      ...

      • The Legend of Suram Fortress movie
It would be totally impossible to copy something like this, because Parajanov used his own unique personality and created the images out of that.

The rythm, balance, pace; it all

floats together into a magnificent cinematic style.

      A true piece of art.

However, this is not Parajanov’s greatest masterpiece in my opinion.

He did even better with Shadows of forgotten ancestors I think.
