  • If you're looking for a private language school in Korea where you can teach English without much experience or a teaching certificate, don't worry, there are plenty of schools that will accept you
  • The foreign teachers are the scapegoats for each and every problem, so be prepared to be yelled at a lot, usually in Korean, and then be prepared to be yelled at for not understanding what it is they yelled at you for later

If you’re looking for a private language school in Korea where you can teach English without much experience or a teaching certificate, don’t worry, there are plenty of schools that will accept you. One such school is Avalon.

Avalon is a private company composed of eight campuses in

Korea, most of which are in or near Seoul.

The school I worked for is in Suji, near Bundang.

While on paper the school seems perfect, there are several problems.

The school is first and foremost a business, which makes education difficult.

The foreign teachers are the scapegoats for ...

      • each and every problem, so be prepared to be yelled at a lot, usually in Korean, and then be prepared to be yelled at for not understanding what it is they yelled at you for later.

The Korean teachers there speak very little English, so don’t expect a lot

of help or friendship from them.

The directors are the most frustrating part, as they seem you a little more important than the phones or the floors.

        You’re expendanble.

And you’ll be constantly reminded of said fact.

I would suggest another company if you’re looking to teach in Korea.

For you information there are over 60 Avalon campuses. I have worked there for 3 years now and could not disagree more with this post. I have never been yelled at by anyone, in fact I have been treated very well. It sounds like you were a terrible employee if you were yelled at by a manager from a traditionally non-confrontational culture. Don`t take this one post as an example of what teaching at Avalon is like.

Hi. I work for Avalon now and I just got to Korea a couple days ago. Could you tell me more about your experience there? What should I watch out for? Did you serve your full amount of time at the company? I take it that you did not enjoy working there judging from your review. Do you think being expendable is a bad thing? Please write something back to me.

I have been working for avalon for almost a year now and I can say that I agree with everything that the original post stated. I know some Avalons may be different, but from my experience and from what Ive heard from my friends at the other Avalons in Busan, this franchise has no respect for its employees. The management is mediocre at best. Foreign teachers are definitely used as scapegoats. There are opportunities to educate the kids, which makes it worth it, but if you have those few spoiled kids that you don’t let do whatever they want, i can almost guarantee you will get a complaint from a parent for one reason or another. And I can definitely guarantee that the management will not take the side of its teacher, as it is a business, and we’re not the ones giving them money, the parents are.

Also, do not work at Avalon English in Pohang. This Avalon is franchised. Avalon Headquarters doesn’t run this academy.
    The director is terrible.
She doesn’t pay on time and only pays pension and severance when forced to by the labor board.
    She doesn’t provide adequate housing.
She has stalked and harrassed former employees.
She often screams racist slurs and swear words at foreign staff.
She often threatens to fire staff with no reason.
Beware of this academy. She is constantly looking for teachers because so many quit. She often posts on Dave’s ESL cafe and other job boards.
