Hypertension is more commonly known as ‘high blood pressure’ and it affects many north Americans. There are many underlying causes such as diet or pregnancy. What really constitute as high blood pressure is if it exceeds somewhere around 140/90 mmhg. Low blood pressure is not good either but in my opinion, it is better off than high blood pressure because it is more dangerous, with the possibility of leading to strokes, heart attacks/failures, and less severe discomforts such as headaches or dizziness. A family member of mine has this and she is constantly on high blood pressure pills (or BP pills)

and they are not that great - they’re expensive, and with some side effects that are of course not life threatening but annoying. Also, when you start taking pills, you kind of have a ‘dependence’ on it - regularly you hear people saying stuff like, once you take it, you will be taking them forever/ a long time. This is true - since even if you miss one, you will feel the effects of high blood pressure. So where does high blood pressure even come from? A lot of it has to do with our diets. Too much sodium in our diets can cause this - sodium causes more water to be entered to body, thus the pressure (osmotic pressure, not water pressure or blood pressure) to go up. If you have ever heard of the sodium-potassium pumps in the brain, then it is easier to understand how BP pills work, because they contain potassium, in the attempt to balance out the sodium.

Women right after birth (or before and after) may have high blood pressure due to stress or whatever. This usually lowers after a period of time but I have heard that some mothers say that it persists, that it ...

is still a bit higher than before birth. The best you can do is try to control your diet and get more excersise. Of course, a lot of it has to do with heredity as well, so if you know you are at risk, concentrate on the things you can change (diet and lifestyle).

Of course, if someone angers you, you can also expect a rise in blood pressure, so try not to be aggressive and argue back - keep your cool and calm and try to fix the situation another method. A lot of people’s hypertension often leads to a heart

attack (kind of like a triggering factor) because they get too caught up in the situation. So chill a cycle.

Also people with chronic hypertension should purchase themselves the meter thing that measures their BP, although I have heard that sometimes those are not all that reliable. However I also have heard that if you get it done at the doctors, sometimes the patient is ‘nervous’ that the results may be bad, so this alone causes a rise in blood pressure. And obviously, the ones down at the convenience stores like PharmaPlus are almost always wrong because they aren’t even calibrated properly.
