An early film by Seijun Suzuki in which he choses not to use any violence for a change. The story is focused on a gang of prostitutes in Japan after the World War II.

      They are all

really broken down as humans, feeling guilt about what they do for a living but still no giving in.

The everyday life changes for these women when a japanese soldier joins them, and conflict is starting between ...

      • each of the prostitutes.

Suzuki here tries to do something I don’t think he is really capable of.

Sure enough, Gate of Flesh is an impressing visual journey, but Suzuki isn’t supposed to do drama like this.

It’s not his genre, and overall I didn’t find this film very interesting.

The people within it just doesn’t feel real enough.

There’s nothing wrong with the acting.

The director just isn’t capable of what he is trying to achieve here.
