‘The Alchemist’ is a magical fable about fulfilling your dream. Full of optimism, it’s a story told very well by author Paulo Coelho. ‘The Alchemist’ is the story of Santiago, an Andalusian Shepherd boy who gets repeated dreams of an hidden treasure awaiting him at the Egyptian pyramids. He yearns to travel in search of this treasure as extravagant as any ever found. From his home in Spain, he journeys to the markets of Tangiers and into the Egyptian desert, where a fateful encounter with the alchemist awaits him.

He has to understand the omens, signs and symbols throughout his journey to reach his destination. Through his journey he meets a gypsy woman, a wise king, a crystal merchant, a camel driver, an Englishman, an alchemist (who is supposed to have the power of transforming lead to gold and is the one who knows the language of the world. )

and many other interesting characters. He also, meets the true love of his life on the journey.

The story is an inspiring tale of making your own destiny instead of compromising on your dreams. With simple language and simple examples, the book teaches words of wisdom. The story highlights the fact that when people are young they are not afraid to dream and to yearn for everything they would like to see happen to them in their lives. But, as time passes, a mysterious negative force convinces them that it will be impossible for them to realize their destiny.

But this force is the same force which prepares the spirit and the will to achieve that dream. The story teaches that if one listens to one’s heart, with determination, courage and faith, one can achieve what one desires. Fearing failure and disappointment people don’t take the path of fulfilling their ...

      • dreams. And those who compromise on their destiny, will have to lead a life of misery, unhappiness and emptiness.

One should have a positive attitude towards life and life the present to the fullest without worrying about the future. Because as the old king in the story says, ‘when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it. ’ Another thought put forward in the story is that love never keeps a man from pursuing his destiny. If he abandons that pursuit, its because it wasn’t true love.

Santiago finds his true love on his path to fulfilling his dream. And so he tells his lady love, ‘I love you because the entire universe conspired to help me find you. ’ The story also, puts light on the thought that when we love, we always strive to become better than what we are. To realize one’s destiny is

        a person’s only obligation.

Life is generous to those who pursue their destiny. Santiago discovers that the soul of the world is the soul of the God and that is the soul of himself. And the real treasure lies where your heart belongs and the treasure was the journey itself. People who take the path of fulfilling their destiny can find God.

They will get their treasure in life after trials and tribulations. He learns words of wisdom, the language of the world and many new things on his journey. He moves forward to pursue the life he desired, a life of happiness, fulfillment and satisfaction. The novel provides a good read for everyone because everyone has dreams and wants to see those dreams fulfilled.

This book combines philosophy with a story put up in such a way that even a person who finds philosophy boring won’t be bored. All in all, I wish to read more of Paulo Coelho. To conclude, as the old king said, ‘Never stop dreaming. ’
