  • Avoid the drive during busy times of the day if you can
  • If you walk this trail it's about 15 minutes or so, which is nice for strolls - but not if you're lugging beach umbrellas (your own), inflated toys, blankets, small children, etc. But wait - there is a tram that runs from a convenient place in the park to the boardwalk
  • The shuffleboard court is free and the kids (8,12,14,16)actually enjoyed playing - once
  • A tad slow for today's kids - but they enjoyed the experience and learning something new

We meet our daughter and her family in Florida every March. We’ve been to Captiva Island and Tampa - which were wonderful, but this year we decided to try the Florida panhandle to cut the drive from Michigan and Tennessee shorter. We chose the Destin area and Topsail Hill Preserve State Park. We arrived late in the afternoon on a Saturday and had to endure a huge traffic mess while driving through Destin. Avoid the drive during busy times of the day if you can.

We’d chosen Topsail so my daughter and her husband,4kids and 2 dogs could camp and we (boomers) could rent a cabin or cottage. Finding a place that allows dogs (condos, etc. ) is difficult and expensive, so we prefer state parks. Topsail was once a private RV park and has

amenities that many state parks do not.

(I can only thinkn of shuffleboard at the moment). It’s beautifully maintained and a wonderful place for families. Our cottage was only a few-minute walk to our daughter’s campsite. The cottage: Appears to be a one-room prefab house.

This is not a bad thing - it was clean and modern and each one was landscaped individually. They were far enough apart to give a feeling of privacy but not of isolation if you want to be ‘alone’. Inside was beautiful - hardwood floors, screened in back porch (not good for jigsaw puzzles as the pieces fall through the slats - oops). We fit all 8 of us in for meals and tv watching - and had 2 overnight guests as well (check with ...

      • the office so they’ll let them in after hours-security is very consiencious, gave a safe, not intrusive feeling).

The kitchn has a full size frige and stove and has more counter space than my house at home (well, most houses have . . . nevermind).

The dining area was roomy as well. There is parking for 2 vehicles with a pergola or awning over one space. Paved street and driveway. The beach is wonderful - nearly private - many times there were only a handful of people there with us.

The sand is wonderful for sandcastles and feels great on the toes. Clear aqua water and blue skys against white sand is a feast for the eyes. I think I wore out my camera. There is a paved trail that leads to the

        boardwalk over the protected dunes.

If you walk this trail it’s about 15 minutes or so, which is nice for strolls - but not if you’re lugging beach umbrellas (your own), inflated toys, blankets, small children, etc. But wait - there is a tram that runs from a convenient place in the park to the boardwalk. It is run by volunteers and leaves every 20 minutes on the dot. We loved this feature - especially after a long day of sand building.

The shuffleboard court is free and the kids (8,12,14,16)actually enjoyed playing - once. A tad slow for today’s kids - but they enjoyed the experience and learning something new. I really have no complaints at all - other than the cottages fill up quickly for spring. It looks like they’re adding more - I hope so!
