      Bill Bryson’s latest book, the Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid, is an entertaining account of his early years growing up in fifties America. An era that first saw the popularisation of television, the teenager and the element that tied the whole lot together in a nice neat bundle- consumerism.

      Bryson was actually


      born in 1951 so were talking about his very early life. He describes for example programmes such as Zorro, friendless boys such as the aptly named Milton Milton and the problems with dogs on paper rounds. It’s really rather lovely, evoking an era that he seems to want us to believe was all very innocent.

      However it was, as Bryson tells us in great detail, the time of the cold war and the constant threat of nuclear bombs hung over people’s heads. No one Bryson seems to think would of been surprised if world war three had been declared, yer still they trawled on living each day as ...

      This seems to me that was not so much an innocence rather a generation that had already lived through a depression and a war already.

      Bill Bryson a great knack of appealing to everybody and this book is no different. Whether you are 18 or 80 the

      books themes are universal. Unfortunately it is all seen through rose tinted glasses, selling his book purely on nostalgic value. It’s a shame because there is a feeling that Bryson has a lot of insight about his nation that he is not imparting. Even more of a shame that he’s leaving up to people like Michael Moore.
