The second part in Kobayashi’s trilogy about Kaji is the best one in my opinion. Here he has been transferred to “the field”, right in the face of war.

The biggest trouble for him is

not to stay alive in the battles, but to avoid fights with his fellow soldiers.

Kaji defends the “weak” people who aren’t treated well amongst the soldiers, and this leads him to a lot of ...

      • problems.

At the same time he has to think about his girlfriend who his pregnant back home.

The russian army is closing in and all hell is awaiting Kaji on the battlefield.

        One of the

most powerful epic pieces or work ever made.

So much thought and human sympathy has been put into this cinematic masterpiece.

Kobayashi’s best film and a milestone of japanese cinema, comparable to the finest works of Akira Kurosawa.
