The first part in Kobayashi’s gigantic trilogy on World War II. Tatsuya Nakadai does one of the cinematic history’s most impressive acting in all of the three films as Kaji, a man who goes through

      huge personality change.

He begins as a promising young military officer in charge of a war prison camp filled with chinese.

Kaji developes a sympathy for these men and helps them in every way he ...

      • can.

That is, he does everything to keep them from suffering.

In the end this can not go on though as he is forced to watch all of these poor men being executed.

        This is

a very powerful story and it tells the story of something not spoken much about before.

The japanese side of the World War II is practically unknown except for this.

Very, very intense and intelligent drama.
