Tripping the Rift is an unusual show. It has a fairly solid basis as a science fiction spoof: sure it has been done before but there is so much material to be found that there is still much to be done and new fodder is always being developed in the world of science fiction.

Its cast is brilliant, especially since it boasts two of the most capable and talented character/voice actors in the business today: Stephen Root who stars as Chode and

Maurice LaMarche who stars as Gus.

The rest of the cast ain’t too shabby either, Gina Gershon is particularly good in the role of the sex android/science officer Six.

There is a whole lot of promise here, but more often than not Tripping the Rift fails to deliver on that promise.

Too many of the jokes and even whole episodes are completely uninspired and bring little in the way of true wit or originality to the proceedings.

      This is pretty much ...

      • a run of the mill show, despite all the talent behind the scenes.

That said it is still an enjoyable show, and one that I think could very likely improve in later seasons.

Whether or not it does is another story, of course, but for good, lowbrow, completely mindless entertainment Tripping the Rift ain’t too bad.

The DVD is very prettily packaged (although I find the cardboard foldovers a bit annoying), but is completely lacking in any sort of special features.

        No

commentaries, no featurettes, nothing but a couple of artwork galleries.

A show like this simply demands special features, I mean this show is obviously geared towards the Sci Fi geek and yet they offer nothing that any self-respecting sci fi geek is going to expect in a DVD.

Due to the ultimate mediocrity of the show itself and the complete lack of any meaningful special features on this disk, I am going to have to give Tripping the Rift Season 1 DVD a mediocre rating.
