I am reviewing The Case of the Jolly Hangman, a Sherlock Holmes episode from the boxed set, Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Series 39 Thrilling Episodes. This series was produced by Sheldon Reynolds and filmed in France in the fifties.

Ronald Howard, the son of actor Leslie Howard,

stars as Sherlock Holmes, and Marion Crawford stars as Watson.

This episode finds a widow in need of Holmes help.

Her husband was recently discovered hung in a hotel room, where he had been staying on the job as a traveling salesman.

      His death is said ...

      • to be a suicide, but his widow does not believe it to be so.

She hires Holmes to investigate the matter.

This is another episode that is forgetful to me.

It is one of those that you watch and then pass out of your mind.

        It’s

not incredibly good like such episodes as The Belligerent Ghost, The Neurotic Detective, The Exhumed Client, The Vanished Detective, and The Christmas Pudding.

If you’re a fan, you will want to watch it, but it’s nothing to get excited about.

Howard and Crawford are wonderful actors as usual.
