I am reviewing The Case of the Haunted Gainsborough, a Sherlock Holmes episode from the boxed set, Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Series 39 Thrilling Episodes. This series was produced by Sheldon Reynolds and filmed in France in the fifties.

Ronald Howard, the son of actor Leslie Howard, stars as Sherlock Holmes, and Marion Crawford stars as Watson.

The Case of the Haunted Gainsborough finds Holmes in

the employ of a man who wishes to be rid of a ghost in his house.

He hires Holmes to investigate, as it seems that every night the woman from a painting he hangs over his fireplace, comes to life and walks down his stairs with a candle, cursing him and his decision to try to sell the painting.

House and Watson witness this ghost on several ...

      • occasions as they stay at the house, and Holmes even becomes stumped, beginning to think that the lady really is a ghost.

In the end, however, he is able to come to the conclusion that she is in fact real, and is acting on behalf of someone else, trying to scare people away from the castle, as there is a considerable amount of money hidden within.

        This episode

        is one of my favorites.

It is very enjoyable, suspenseful, and funny.

For a while, it really leaves you wondering as to if the ghost of the castle is indeed real.

Howard and Crawford are impeccable as always, and the supporting cast, for once, is not terrible.

        The setting is very enjoyable.

Who couldn’t love a castle mystery? I highly recommend this episode.
