I am reviewing The Case of Harry Croker, a Sherlock Holmes episode from the boxed set, Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Series 39 Thrilling Episodes. This series was produced by Sheldon Reynolds and filmed in France in the fifties. Ronald Howard, the son of actor Leslie Howard, stars as Sherlock Holmes, and Marion Crawford stars as Watson.

This episode finds Holmes in the

service of a well known magician, known as Harry Croker. He has been accused of murder, and professes his complete innocence.

Not surprisingly, Scotland Yard doesn’t believe a word and arrests him. It isn’t long before he escapes from them and employs Holmes to help him.

In the end, Holmes solves the case and saves an innocent man. This episode is ...

      • quite enjoyable.

I have always enjoyed magic, so this has special meaning to me, although the acting by the supporting actor isn’t great. Magic is always fun though, right? It’s entertaining to watch Holmes try to accomplish some magic of his own.

The thing with this whole series is that Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes isn’t portrayed very well. Howard shows a humorous

side to Holmes, but perhaps not as strong deductive powers, nor his other many talents like boxing.

In fact, he is portrayed as rather a wimp at other things besides deduction in this series. He has no resolve, and no coldness of character.

Howard’s Holmes is warm, genuine, caring, and funny. If you don’t mind the change, then I recommend watching the series.
