I am reviewing The Case of the Belligerent Ghost, a Sherlock Holmes episode from the boxed set, Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Series 39 Thrilling Episodes. This series was produced by Sheldon Reynolds and filmed in France in the fifties. Ronald Howard, the son of actor Leslie Howard, stars as Sherlock Holmes, and Marion Crawford stars as Watson.

This was the very first Sherlock Holmes episode I watched ever, so it has a little sentimental value

for me. This is my second favorite episode of the Ronald Howard series.

And no, Ronald Howard is not the actor from the Andy Griffith series. This episode pits Watson against a so-called ghost! Upon returning to Baker Street one night, he confides in his friend that he was punched by a ghost.

Holmes manages to get the rest of the story out of a very flustered Watson. Apparently Watson had been down ...

      • at the local pub and met up with a man named Higgins.

As he was walking home, the man collapsed and Watson took him to be dead! He returned the poor dead man to his place of residence, and then went back for another drink at the local pub. He was indeed surprised to find himself facing the very same man in the street! Without hesitance, Higgins punched him in the eye and then ran off, leaving

a very confused and terrified Watson.

Needless to say, Holmes discovers that someone else was impersonating the man. A mystery involving burglary is exposed, and in the end, Holmes goes as far to impersonate the dead man again, with the idea of seeing if he can fool his friend.

He succeeds. This episode is very enjoyable, and very funny.

It’s one of the best of the series. I highly recommend watching this one sooner rather than later.
