I am reviewing The Case of the Pennsylvania Gun, a Sherlock Holmes episode from the boxed set, Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Series 39 Thrilling Episodes. This series was produced by Sheldon Reynolds and filmed in France in the fifties. Ronald Howard, the son of actor Leslie Howard, stars as Sherlock Holmes, and Marion Crawford stars as Watson.

      The Case of

the Pennsylvania Gun finds Holmes and Watson to be investigating a very interesting case indeed. The mystery involves dumbbells, guns, fishing, intrigue, and suspense.

‘Have you seen Mr. Holmes?- Watson asks a constable, as he walks about the crime scene.

‘Yes, Sir. He was sliding down the banisters.

’ ‘What?’ Watson asks, fully confused. ‘That’s right, Sir.

      Sliding ...

      • down the banisters, he was. ’ A moment later, Holmes approaches the pair, and Watson inquires, ‘What have you been doing all day?’ Holmes shrugs and replies, ‘First I fished’ ‘Yes?’ Watson presses.

‘And then I slid down the banisters. ’ As Watson looks at his friend as if he’s mad, the constable inputs, ‘You see.

        I told you. ’

This is just one of the funny scenes to this episode.

Once again, Howard and Crawford have incredible chemistry, and have many funny scenes between them. The plot does not follow Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in any episode, but it is still enjoyable to watch.

If you don’t mind having the characters played with a bit, then I highly recommend the series.
