Yesterday, after months of anticipation, I went to the movies and saw Shrek the Third. The big green ogre is back, ugly as ever; his manners haven’t improved much, despite living at the royal palace, but his wife Princess Fiona still loves him.

Fiona hints that she would like to have children, but Shrek isn’t keen on the idea.

      The king

(who never became human again, he is still a frog) dies, and now Shrek is expected to rule the land.

He does not want that, either.

He wants back to his swamp.

There is, however, another heir to the throne, young Arthur, who is currently at some sort of a boarding school far away.

Shrek decides to go there, bring Arthur,

      • and make him king.

As Shrek leaves together with Donkey and Cat, Fiona informs him that she is pregnant, which results in Shrek having nightmares about green ogre babies.

When Shrek is gone, Prince Charming, who is still around, wants to take over the kingdom and claim the crown.

The movie provides some laughs, but overall, it falls rather flat, in

        my opinion.

It does not compare with the first two, at all.

The first Shrek movie gets you with its unusual twists of familiar fairy tales, the second one keeps up rather well, creating a new story and adding some good new characters.

The third one wants to do the same, but it appears that the flow of creativity has gotten much weaker.
