The beauty of individual things is undeniable only in our heads. Someone is sure that he ties his shoelaces beautifully or hangs stuff in the closet. The Italian Paolo Sorrentino is not sure of anything. He knows. He knows how to beautifully shoot a girl by the pool, shaving her pubes, to portray a famous man with a towel on his thighs. His new film LORO is first and foremost a demonstration of what a director can do.

  • Silvio Berlusconi is a billionaire, and so much so that everyone wants to like him. We know that he drives expensive cars, his drivers are dressed like pop stars. His real estate numbers more than 12 houses, and his influence on local TV is frighteningly weighty. But who surrounds him 24 hours a day, who is trying to please him, and who is trying to cheat him? That’s roughly what this Italian film is about.

  • LORO, movie (2018)
  • The first thing to understand is don’t believe the trailers. LORO is not the life story of a politician who manages to win parliamentary elections with his newly formed party in just 60 days. Instead, Sorrentino is primarily about the behind-the-scenes life of the Italian beau monde, the people willing to lick Silvio until they begin to see their reflection in him.

  • LORO, movie (2018)
  • The film is easily divided into two parts. The first is an intense social drama, where people forget their principles, forget about what is good and bad. All so that they will be noticed and invited to a party thrown just because someone has a lot of money in his pocket.

  • It is possible that through this, Sorrentino is poking us at our mercantilism. With brainless whores in evening gowns willing to come and spread their legs for a couple of lines of cocaine, the director teases modern society. The lack of principles, modesty, and morality is what has gripped 21st-century society and perhaps what gave birth to all this harassment stuff in our time.

  • For the second half of the film, Sorrentino surrounds Berlusconi with different stripes with a single desire to pluck a piece. The story itself is understated, here fleeting accounts of the accusations leveled in his direction from Italy’s federal channels, modestly depicting orgies at the villa and his relationship with the Mafia. Many who have been interested in Berlusconi’s persona might accuse the filmmaker of neatly presenting the bacchanalia that the politician did back then. However, it is worth keeping in mind that Sorrentino tried to portray as realistically as possible the facts of Silvio’s biography and the artistic component.

  • LORO, movie (2018)
  • LORO can hardly be called a biographical film in its pure form. Instead, it is a film that touches on a genuine personality, with everything mixed in at once. It adds dynamics and keeps you from getting bored. Of course, it’s possible that if there was more provocative content in the film, the film could have become something more weighty, but then, the beauty and aestheticism would be gone.

So I think Paolo Sorrentino was able to achieve a balance of the beautiful and the wild. All of this, together with the stunning geometry in every frame, is worthy of seeing LORO.
