The Boy is about a nanny, Greta, who is hired to take care of a boy while the elderly couple goes on a trip. Greta is played by Lauren Cohan, actress from The Walking Dead, so initially I was pretty excited to watch this movie. Unfortunately, It ended up being boring and completely failed at being scary in the slightest. Truly disappointing to see this coming from the actress, but perhaps it’s more so the directors fault. Either way, it’s another generic horror movie to go into the creepy doll sub genre.

  • Going into the plot of the movie, Greta quickly learns that the boy that she was going to be taking care of was actually just a doll. The movie then follows a very predictable and generic spooky doll movie, originally she thinks it’s a joke and doesn’t take it seriously, but then something scary happens and now she 100% believes that the doll is actually a person. Only one thing at the end actually surprised me, but I can promise you, you won’t be finding anything scary about this movie. The worst part is that it’s not even one of those movies that’s so bad it’s funny, it’s simply bad.

I feel that the movie took way too long for what was written, despite it being on the short end of a movie title. I feel this story could have easily been told in some 20-30 minutes and nothing would have been lost. The movie is filled with boring conversations and a side plot with Greta’s boyfriend trying to find her. Again, you can already predict where that’s going to go without watching a second of the film.

  • Taking a look at the setting, yep, you guessed it, it takes place in a big mansion. It’s really kind of confusing why this old couple even has this massive house when it’s literally just them, you would think they’d downsize at some point, but whatever. The story with the doll is that their son had allegedly died in a fire when he was young, so they got a doll to replace him, and they think that his soul has possessed the doll. Again, generic and boring. Nothing knew is being added to the horror genre with this addition, and I think that is the main problem with a lot of the horror movies that we see these days. No one tries to be original, so you see this exact same set up popping up everywhere.

Of course, there is a lot of potential scares that could occur in this house, right? There’s tons of potential when you’re looking at a haunted house, even if the setting itself is unoriginal. Unfortunately, pretty much every “scary” thing that takes place in the movie happens in her dreams, once again making that section of the movie feel pointless. There is a couple scares while she’s actually awake, but they all consist of the doll moving by itself. That’s literally it, that’s as scary as it gets with this movie.

  • Taking a look at the Greta herself, she’s clearly not a very smart person, and the acting from Laura Cohan was pretty atrocious in my opinion. She simply comes off as a loon to me throughout most of the movie, which isn’t intentional. There’s a part in the beginning of the movie where she’s looking at something with her back to the door. Someone walks in and says, “Hello.” casually. She then immediately literally jumps up and drops what she’s holding, literally screaming. It was such an awful over reaction, I had to laugh at this one part. I honestly don’t even think it should be considered a jump scare, since the only thing that could have made you jump would have been her reaction to the situation.

She also has this odd romance with the gardener guy, but it really doesn’t make sense. It’s revealed that she just recently got out of a long-term abusive relationship, why would she instantly start trying to date someone she just met? It makes no sense, and the addition of this doesn’t really add anything to the movie, besides maybe give the gardener boy a reason to care for her I suppose. Either way, Greta is a very poorly written character that is more or less completely flat throughout the film.

  • Of course we also have to take a look at the creepy doll itself. In my opinion, it doesn’t look like a scary doll at all. There really isn’t anything creepy about its appearance. If you take a look at other dolls in these kinds of movies, they always actually look scary. Take a look at Chucky, or Annabelle. Without knowing anything about the dolls, you instantly get bad vibes from just looking at them, and you can understand why people don’t like to have the doll.

In this movie, right from the beginning, Greta pulls the whole “you’re creepy so I’m going to put a blanket over you” bit. Not only is this unoriginal, it’s completely unnecessary. If I was going to be stuck in a massive mansion with a doll, I would gladly choose this doll over anything else, because it actually looks pretty normal and not threatening at all. Not to mention, the doll doesn’t do anything throughout the entire movie besides move around, and you don’t even get to see it happen at all.

  • Let’s also take a closer look at the whole ex-boyfriend character. It should be mentioned that Greta is actually from America, and she has literally left the country to get away from him. You’re telling me this man is so desperate for her, that he is going to go across seas just to see her? Not to mention she was warned that he knew where she was, so she knew he was going to be coming towards her beforehand. Why would she not simply call the police? Even then, when the ex actually shows up, he allows her to sleep upstairs by herself. Why would she not just call the police in this situation? We already know that the phones work because she spends a lot of the movie talking to her friend about what happened, so just call the police.

Of course, she also forms this weird attraction to the doll which makes no sense and comes out of no where. She decides that she can’t be without the doll, and that she won’t ever leave him. The writing in this movie really seems to not have any flow at all, and things seem to just happen because the writers want them to. It’s hard to feel for any of these characters when no one is making any rational decisions, there’s simply no way to relate to anyone. Very disappointing writing. The worst part is, a scary doll movie can totally still work, as long as if everything in the writing is done well.

To conclude, don’t expect to be scared or even entertained when you watch this movie. There really is no substance to get out of watching it, and it would simply be a complete waste of time. If you’re looking for a scary doll movie, maybe watch a classic like Chucky, or an actually decent one like Annabelle. Maybe the people who wrote this movie should also take a look at these movies, and get an idea of what makes a good scary doll movie.

I felt that this movie was scary and was brilliantly done for being a doll movie, I think that younger generations may have to have that blood, guts, and gore in order to enjoy a movie, which I feel is just cheesy and unnecessary. The acting was executed well, and I have watched a lot of scary movies in my 37 years on this planet, this movie is one that stayed with me, especially the end which I never saw coming.

I feel that although those movies are good, this is just as good as them. And is at least realistic, unlike the Child’s Play movies. For a horror movie to be realistic is very hard, and it’s done well here.
